The Yokohama Tire Company is a globally recognized name in the tire and rubber manufacturing industry, with a history that dates back to 1917. Officially known as The Yokohama Rubber Tire Company, Limited, the company was founded in Tokyo, Japan, where its global headquarters remain today.
Yokohama began as a strategic joint venture between two established organizations: BF Goodrich, a leading American company, and Yokohama Cable Manufacturing Company of Japan. This partnership laid the foundation for what would become one of the most respected tire manufacturers in the world.
In 1920, Yokohama constructed its first manufacturing facility, known as the Hiranuma Plant, located in Yokohama, Japan. This plant marked a major milestone, producing Yokohama’s earliest products including tires, industrial belts, hoses, and tire manufacturing equipment. That same year, Yokohama successfully developed and produced its first corded tire, showcasing the company’s early commitment to innovation and quality.
Throughout the early 1920s, Yokohama continued to advance its manufacturing capabilities. In 1921, the company introduced its first cut-edge flat belt, further strengthening its industrial product line. However, in 1923, the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake destroyed the Hiranuma Plant entirely.
