Michelin is one of the most respected tire manufacturers in the world, with a history that began in 1888. Officially known as SCA Compagnie Générale des Établissements Michelin, the company was founded in France and remains headquartered in Clermont-Ferrand, located in the Auvergne region.

In the late 1880s, brothers André Michelin and Édouard Michelin were operating a small rubber factory in Clermont-Ferrand, France. While they believed strongly in the future of pneumatic tires, they were dissatisfied with how difficult and time-consuming existing designs were to repair and mount onto rims.
Determined to improve tire technology, the Michelin brothers developed a solution. In 1891, they patented the removable pneumatic tire, a major innovation that allowed tires to be repaired and replaced much more efficiently. This breakthrough quickly proved its value when French cycling champion Charles Terront used Michelin’s removable tire to win the world’s first long-distance bicycle race, Paris–Brest–Paris, in 1891.
