Kumho Tire Company, Inc. was established in 1960 and is one of South Korea’s leading tire manufacturers. The company is headquartered in Gwangju, South Korea, and was founded by Park In-Chon, a highly respected and influential South Korean entrepreneur. The name “Kumho” comes from the Korean language, and in many European markets, the brand is commonly referred to as Kumho Tyre.
Kumho produces a wide range of tires for passenger cars, SUVs, light trucks, and commercial vehicles. The company markets its products primarily under two brands: Kumho and Marshal. Over the years, Kumho has built a strong reputation for combining performance, value, and reliability.
Global Manufacturing & Operations
Kumho operates major manufacturing and distribution facilities across several countries. In South Korea, the company runs three key plants:
- Gokseong Plant
- Pyeongtaek Plant
- Gwangju Plant, which also serves as Kumho’s Research & Development Center
In China, Kumho operates additional manufacturing facilities located in:
- Changchun
- Tianjin
- Nanjing (Gaoxin Plant)
The company has also expanded its global presence with facilities in Binh Duong Province, Vietnam, and in Macon, Georgia, USA, strengthening its ability to serve international markets.
Kumho’s Early Innovation & Growth
Kumho’s history of innovation dates back to its earliest years. In September 1960, the company was originally founded as Samyang Tire in Yang-dong, Gwangju City. Just a few months later, Kumho produced its first tire in January 1961, manufacturing approximately 20 tires per day.
In April 1963, Kumho achieved a major milestone by developing Korea’s first compact passenger car tire. This accomplishment marked a significant step forward for the country’s automotive tire industry.
